Our story
Experience on both sides of the apprenticeship relationship.
SSES is owned by Suzanne and Jeff Sapsed. Their experience includes employing apprentices in family-run nurseries, teaching and assessment, supporting training provision, business leadership and fostering.
That background shaped a clear vision: apprenticeship assessment should be independent and rigorous, but the organisation delivering it can still be accessible, responsive and human.
As the offer expands beyond its original early-years and children’s-services roots, SSES retains the same specialist principle: use credible people, communicate clearly and understand the occupational context.
Meet the team
The people responsible for the service.
Leadership, operations, quality challenge and communications are shown clearly so visitors know who is accountable.
Suzanne Sapsed
Chief Executive Officer
Suzanne has worked with apprenticeships since the 1990s, first as an employer in her own day nurseries and later through teaching, assessing and supporting organisations that work with apprentices. She has maintained a hands-on connection with early years, children and young people throughout her career. Suzanne has worked with independent training providers and higher education institutions to develop their provision and ensure compliance, giving her insight into the apprentice’s journey from initial interest to completion.
Jeff Sapsed
Financial Director
Jeff began his career by completing an apprenticeship in electronic engineering. He later supported the family’s day nurseries in a variety of roles. At SSES, Jeff focuses on sound financial stewardship, value for employers and training providers, and meeting the organisation’s obligations to stakeholders. He is also the named contact for website data-protection enquiries.
Josh Sapsed
Chief Operating Officer
Josh grew up around the family’s day nurseries and has worked across a primary school, a day nursery and with foster children. Recently promoted to a Director of SSES, he retains day-to-day responsibility as Chief Operating Officer and brings that practical perspective to the operation of SSES.
Sandra D’Ambrosio
Chief Administration Manager
Sandra brings many years of senior office-management experience to SSES. She coordinates the administrative detail behind assessment activity and helps ensure that providers, employers and apprentices receive clear information and a well-organised service.
Joy Baker
Director of Quality Assurance
Joy has extensive experience across childcare and healthcare. She is a qualified registered general nurse and an experienced lecturer, assessor and internal quality assurer, with experience in local colleges and private training providers. Her role brings informed quality oversight and constructive challenge.
Anna McMenamin
Critical Friend
Anna has a diverse background in education and apprenticeships, including quality and compliance work in degree apprenticeships at university level. As SSES’s Critical Friend, she questions assumptions, tests decisions and brings an independent perspective to the board’s activity.
Joe Sapsed
Marketing Manager
Joe is a marketing professional with experience across online and offline channels. He supports SSES with strategy, communication and analytical identification of opportunities, helping the organisation explain its specialist offer clearly to the right audiences.
Independent assessment team
Specialists selected for competence and occupational understanding.
SSES works with independent end-point assessors across its advertised standards. Assessors are selected and quality assured in line with the applicable requirements, helping support consistent and impartial assessment decisions.
Individual assessor details are not published as a public directory. SSES explains relevant arrangements through the agreed provider and employer process.
