National Storytelling Week

Today is the last post of the month, not sure where January went.

On Saturday, 29th, it was the start of National Storytelling Week and a theme we thought worth covering.  When looking for topics I thought this was a great one. I’m guessing storytelling has been happening since the dawn of time, before the written word was even an idea. This year, 2022, is the 22nd year there has been a National Storytelling Week. It was created to increase public awareness of the art, practice and value of storytelling.

I am a great believer in storytelling, whether it is sharing history, reading from a book or making up a tale to entrance the listener.

This quote says it all ‘Reading for pleasure is the single biggest indicator for success in life, more than family circumstances, educational background or income’ (Organisation for Economic Co-operation & Development). I know this quote refers to reading, but there is such a cross over between storytelling and reading. From personal experience I remember reading aloud to my little brother when I could barely read myself, reading to our children when they were young, and still reading to the foster children. Occasionally it is just reading out loud, but more often it diverts onto conversations around the initial story – and what amazing 1-to-1 opportunities that is for the children and me.

The theme for this year is Your Story – My Story. How amazing it would be to get different generations together to share stories and compare their lives lived in different ages. Please visit the link to learn more Www.sfs.org.uk

As Early Years Professionals story-telling is such a natural process. We talk to children about what they did over the weekend, and we share with them tales of our own childhoods. How things have changed. Imagine when you share with a child, something as simple as that you had to get up to turn the telly over, or the light off! The reactions are priceless 😊

If you would like to know more about how we support apprentices, employers and training providers with developing the next generation of Early Years Professionals, please email us on contact@sseducationalservices.co.uk . We look forward to hearing from you!
