Tomorrow, 15th July, is World Youth Skills Day.
‘In 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared 15 July as World Youth Skills Day, to celebrate the strategic importance of equipping young people with skills for employment, decent work and entrepreneurship. Since then, World Youth Skills Day has provided a unique opportunity for dialogue between young people, technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institutions, firms, employers’ and workers’ organizations, policy-makers and development partners.’

As an End Point Assessment Organisation specialising in Early Years, Children and Young People, this feels a very important day to mark. It is a cliché comment, but to quote Whitney Houston, ‘children are our future’ and supporting them to develop the skills they need to survive and thrive should be on the top of everyone’s priority.
There are 3 apprenticeship standards that support working with young people:
- Youth Support Worker Level 3 – Work in a supporting role with young people aged 11-25 to promote their personal, social and educational development
- Youth Justice Practitioner Level 5 – Work with children who have offended or are at risk of offending
- Youth Worker Level 6 – Enable young people to develop and working with young people to facilitate personal, social and educational development
All of which SSES plan to End Point Assess as part of our niche sector work.
At the moment there are 2 other EPAOs that deliver the Level 3, but we are the only sector specific one, with a background in children and young people. Please contact us for further information.
However, the Level 5 and Level 6 have no EPAO at all at the moment. Of course, the issue with that is that the training is not allowed to start until an EPAO is named. There is very good reason for that, at the beginning of the change from frameworks to standards, training was allowed to commence without at least one named EPAO. This obviously caused a backlog and frustration for apprentices and employers waiting to be qualified.
On a positive, we are applying for both as they fit within our group of standards.
